Kick off Consumer Protection Week at Shred Fest

Identity fraud is a serious problem, and with tax season approaching it's important to protect your identity. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, Hillsborough County Consumer Protection will host Shred Fest at the Apollo Beach Recreation Center to kick off Consumer Protection Week. Residents will receive tips from experts, participate in a fitness and skateboard shredding contest, and shred personal documents for FREE!

Here are 10 items to shred at Shred Fest:

  • Bank statements
  • Junk mail
  • Bills
  • Medical records
  • Credit card statements
  • Voided checks
  • Expired credit cards
  • Insurance forms
  • Credit card applications
  • Receipts

There also are a few things you should NOT shred:

  •  Tax returns
  • Investment records
  • Mortgage documentation

So don't just toss junk mail, financial statements, or bills in the trash or recycling bin. Most of it should be shredded to prevent identity theft. For other helpful tips, contact Hillsborough County Consumer Protection at (813) 635-8316, or visit
