Seniors Call in for Help with Social Media

Seniors Call in Real Experts - Teens - for Help with Social Media, Tech

Hillsborough County, Fla. (Feb. 7, 2018) - Students and young adults aren't the only ones who like to stay socially connected through their cellphones and computers. Plenty of seniors also want to text and use social media and popular apps, but don't always know how.

Some Hillsborough County seniors are getting help from the experts: teenagers.

At Hillsborough County's Northdale Recreation Center, high school students have been teaching seniors how to get the most out of their cellphones, mobile phones, laptops, and other electronic devices.

Recreation center leaders brought in the students after seniors said they wanted to text with friends and family and communicate with their children and grandchildren on apps like Facebook and Snapchat but were unfamiliar with the technology.

The students, all members of the Hillsborough County Youth Leadership Council, began working one-on-one with seniors late last year. Popular topics: How to take and send photos with a cellphone, and how to set up a Facebook account.

The next intergenerational teaching session will be from 3:30-5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, at Northdale Park and Recreation Center, 15550 Spring Pine Drive.
